There are many reasons why people are not wealthy. In fact, there is 1 set of reasons that a person themselves, will utilize to justify why they are not wealthy. And there is another set reasons that I believe are more objective in telling us why a person is not wealthy. I’m going to break both of those lists down today, but just know that I am going to show you the 1 reason above all else that kills someone’s ability to build wealth.
1. List #1: This first list is the reasons we use for ourselves to explain why we are not wealthy. This list usually makes sense in our own heads of our current condition and also makes it the fault of something or someone else. I’ve heard items like a divorce, bad upbringing, the economy, politics, socio-economics, time, spouse, children, and virtually every other event under the sun be added to this list. You see, our minds trick us into believing that if we make this list the main cause of our financial state, we are safe, and avoid the danger of it being our own fault. In the moment, we believe it to be more advantageous to not be at fault and instead make our status the cause of something else. This list is ONE of the reasons people aren’t wealthy, but I don’t believe it’s the main one.
2. List #2: This list is an objective list of things that must happen to become wealthy and if not fulfilled, will not allow for wealth. This list includes things like deciding you want wealth, taking responsibility for your situation, have a no-negativity mindset, creating income, saving large amounts of money, and investing for passive income. If these things are not done, ultimately wealth will not be built. The violation of the items on this list play a big part in why people are not wealthy, but again I believe there is 1 reason even bigger than this.
What is the #1 reason most people aren’t wealthy? Comfort. That’s right. Plain and simple. Comfort. Comfort is why someone who is struggling financially doesn’t make a change. They believe it to be more comfortable to stay where they are and less comfortable to get up and do something else. Comfort is the reason why someone who is winning slows down or stops. They believe the end goal is comfort and so when they achieve this end goal they stop doing the very things that got them to where they are. To build wealth we must not seek comfort. Does that mean we intentionally do things to make ourselves uncomfortable? No, I believe that mindset to be idiotic. It does mean that no matter how tempting it is to “stop and smell the roses” we do not forsake what got us to where we are.
When I coach clients, I ask them to do 3 things:
#1 Show up. You must show up to your financial life. If you do not, you also do not have a chance of winning.
#2 Be on time. When we set goals, appointments, and targets you must be on time. If you are not on time, the attainment of your goals is further delayed. This adds up faster than you realize.
#3 Listen. This is not a get rich quick plan. This is not the plan that creates wealth with no effort. This is the plan that asks you to do things you’ve never done before, think like you’ve never thought before, and to pay the price now so you can pay any price later.
