Mike Tyson was fighting a guy by the name of Buster Douglas, on February 11, 1990. At that time, Mike Tyson was the undisputed, undefeated champion in boxing. When you’re undisputed and undefeated, you’ve got swag. Tyson had the swag, but Buster Douglas hit him in the 10th round, knocking him out.
Anyone who has ever been in a fight knows this is true—you can plan all you want, but when punches start to get thrown, plans quickly fly out the window. The same is true in everyday life.
My good friend Tim Storey talked about this at 10XGrowthCon. What do you do when life starts to hit you? Tim said this:
“Momentum is a force, a flow, it’s a current. Some of you have lost your momentum. In life, there will be life interruptions. There will be things that come to your life that you would have never ordered from life’s diner.
Nobody orders a divorce from life’s diner. You start with momentum, but all of a sudden a life interruption hits you and you don’t know what to do. It’s a punch in the face.
When most people have a setback, they take a step back.
But let me tell you, while you’re feeling the sting of your setback, life is preparing your comeback. You don’t have to settle. Some people get hit and they stay down, the choose to settle and not get back up.
They live in what I call, ‘The land of okay’.
‘How’s your life going?’ ‘Okay.’
‘How’s your relationship?’ ‘Okay.’
‘How’s your business?’ ‘Okay.’
The word fight means to contend, to battle. You’re in a battle. To be victorious you need uncommon discipline. You plow, you plow, you plow, you plow, you plow. You plant, you plant, you plant.
Watch how powerful this is.
Every day you have a big bag of seeds. It’s a choice. Today’s decisions are tomorrow’s realities. Somebody is about to reap a giant harvest in life.”
In the boxing ring of life, there will be no harvest, no greatness if you stay down on the mat.
Many of my friends in Houston this past week got a kind of punch in the face. They weren’t planning on Hurricane Harvey happening. I want to encourage everybody who’s been hit to get back up, and I’m willing to do my part by loading up supplies and flying my 10X Airlines out to Houston to bring some relief.
Remember, one of my Rules of Success is to give, give, give.
Be great,
GC
