After every article I write, I say, “Be Great”. This is because you have the capacity to be great, but you also need to be great in order to live the life you want to. My friend Les Brown spoke on this at the first annual 10XGrowthCon—I had him speak because I know he’s committed to helping people discover their greatness. I love being in a room with people who have big dreams and people who have big goals reaching up for greatness.
I want to share with you what Les Brown said happened on his journey toward greatness at 10XGrowthCon:
“Stay persistent after what you want and you’ll get it. Let me tell you a story, I wanted to be a disc jockey. My mentor told me,
“Go to WMBM Radio Station. It’s south of here, in South Beach. Ask for Milton Butterball Smith, use my name and he will give you a shot.”
And so I said, “Hello, Mr. Butterball. How are you sir? My name is Les Brown. Sir, I’d like to be a disc jockey. Mr. Washington told me to come see you, sir.”
He said, “Yes. I know Leroy. You have any experience?”
I said, “No sir, I don’t.”
“You have any journalism in your background?”
I said, “No, sir, I don’t.”
He said, “Sorry, I’m sorry, I can’t hire you.”
I went back and I said, “Mr. Washington, I used your name like you told me but they said no.”
He said, “Don’t take it personally. Most people are so negative, they have to say no seven times before they say yes. You’ve got to be hungry. Go back again.”
I went back again. “Hello, Mr. Butterball. How are you, sir? My name is Les Brown. Sir, I like to be a disc jockey.”
“I know what your name is. Weren’t you here yesterday?”
“Yes sir, I was.”
“Didn’t I tell you no yesterday?”
“Yes sir, you did.”
“Then why are you back today?”
“Well sir, I didn’t know whether or not somebody was laid off or somebody was fired, sir.”
“No one was laid off or fired, now get on out of here.”
I came back the next day looking at him like I was seeing him for the first time. “Hello, Mr. Butterball, how are you sir? My name is Les Brown. Sir, I’d like to be a disc jockey.”
“I know what your name is. Weren’t you here the last two days?”
“Yes, sir I was.”
“Didn’t I tell you no the last two days?”
“Yes sir, you did.”
He said, “Then why are you back today?”
“Well sir, I don’t know whether or not someone had got sick or someone died, sir.”
He said, “No one got sick or died. No one was laid off or fired. Now don’t you come back here again.”
You’ve got to be unstoppable.
I came back again like I was looking at him for the first time. “Hello, Mr. Butterball, how are you?”
He looked at me and says, “Go get me some coffee.”
I said, “Yes, sir.”
After telling that story, Les Brown went on to tell those at 10XGrowthCon:
“If you want something bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace, and sleep for it. If all that you dream and scheme is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it, and if you gladly sweat for it, and fret for it, and plan for it, and lose all your terror of the opposition for it, and if you simply go after that thing that you want, with all of your capacity, strength, faith, hope and confidence…if neither cold, poverty, famish, sickness nor pain of body and brain could keep you away from the thing that you want, if you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, you’ll get it.
You have the ability to do more than you could ever begin to imagine; you have the ability to literally change people’s lives. When you are on the path to seek a higher calling with your life, to live a bigger life, things happen to you.
A lot of people are worried about what’s going on in the White House. I say think about what’s going on in your house. Focus on that. That’s what you control. Elsie Robinson said, “Things may happen around you and things may happen to you, but the only things that really count are the things that happen in you.”
Your circumstances won’t define you. Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.”
As my friend Les Brown said, you have greatness in you.
Now go and get what you want.
Be great,
GC
