My clients work with me and my company because they don’t want to wait. They want to enjoy life now. They want to do what they love, travel, learn, grow, and make an impact. Phase 1: Learn. We are taught to spend the first 25 years of our lives learning. Think about it. You then go through your teen years learning so that you can go to college to learn even more. Now I’m not against learning and in fact I typically spend 3-4 hours per day learning. The issue I have is with WHAT we are learning. Or more accurately, what we aren’t learning. You see, in 25 years of learning, I was never taught about money. I was never taught about wealth. I was never taught how to communicate, sell, negotiate or close. I was never taught how to use debt or avoid taxes. We were taught to learn only so that we can work.

Phase 2: Work. After learning is done, we can then work. We are prepared to follow orders and regurgitate information through our education process. We then get a job so that we can pay the bills. Often times we are working so we can pay off student loans, make mortgage payments, pay off credit cards, and hopefully someday pay off the house and contribute enough to retirement that we can live our golden years out. The problem is we are taught to earn just enough to be comfortable. We are paycheck to paycheck or just above that and there is no surplus. We aren’t working out of a greater purpose and we aren’t earning our to our potential. We are trading time for money to get a paycheck to merely survive. We do this with the hope that one day we can retire.

Phase 3: Play. This is the cheese on the end of the mousetrap. If you simply work hard enough and save and do all the right things for the next 40 years of your life, then you may be lucky enough to play. We sacrifice experiences and truly living so that we can contribute more to this dream. Most of us don’t actually know what we are going to do when we get there, but we know that it sounds better than what we do now. However, statistically, people aren’t even making it to retirement and most of the ones that do aren’t making it through retirement. This concept doesn’t actually make sense when you think about it. You’re older and many of the activities you dream of doing will be more difficult to do and won’t be as enjoyable.

This is how it should be: Learn, work, and play everyday. You shouldn’t live your life in deferment. You have life today and you aren’t guaranteed anything tomorrow.
