A person doesn’t go to home depot to buy a drill. They go there to buy a hole. Similarly, as a business owner, you won’t change your phone service for your business because you need or want a new phone. There are only 8 reasons anyone would make a change to their phone service. This 8-part series will discuss each of them.

The first one in this series is: Hardware or Software Failure.

A decade ago, the previous generation of business phone systems, called a PBX, public branch exchange, was an on-premise phone system located in a closet at the business. The system would last 12 years on average. Today, modern business phone systems, while more advanced, are lasting less than half of that, with an average life-span of 5 years.

Modern business phone systems are nothing more than a computer. As a result, components fail, hard drives die, circuits break, and software bugs crash the system. Once this happens, and it’s never expected, planned, or convenient, your customers and prospects can’t call you and your staff cannot call them, crippling your business.

With an outage like this, the mean-time to resolution is 24-48 hours, if the hardware and software is current enough to repair, and if you can find a technician. Otherwise, you’ve lost 2 or more days of productivity and you’re forced to make an impulsive, rash, and emergency decision to buy a new system without being educated on what you’re buying.

The solution is to leverage a system that is hosted; one that will allow you to grow your business, expand your staff, and add more customers without the threat of an outage, expensive maintenance, and technical obsolescence. With a hosted system, phone calls are routed over the Internet and the service provider typically has a highly available, geographically redundant hardware and server infrastructure. This means that you don’t have to worry about hardware or software failure, maintenance updates or upgrades, and internet circuit or phone line outages. You can focus on hyper-growing your business.
