Recently, we had the pleasure of participating in the Read to Feed drive for Heifer International. A client of mine who is on staff at the New Academy school in Canoga Park, Ca.,asked us to take a look at the organization and what it stands for. This charity is a lovely one dedicated to end hunger and poverty across the world. Donation of an animal to a village is similar to gifting them a small business which will allow them to bring sustainable agriculture to an area with a history of poverty. We were asked to raise funds and sponsor the kids in this school as they each chose a book to read for the charity drive.
It was a great experience to be with the children who had been reading books for weeks to make a difference for these impoverished families. It was truly a humbling experiences to realize how much we have to be grateful for in our lives and what we can do to help others. I wish I had more time to learn the gifts of the students from the school, and find ways to brighten their days. At times, we forget we were all kids once and all of us have that desire to feel special and an important part of the world.
The interesting part, is that as an entrepreneur, I have decided to take my life and future into my own hands and create the brighter days I desire. Since many of these children are unfamiliar with these types of options, I am grateful every day for the opportunity to have the ability to create the life that we want for our daughters. If only, each of these children at New Academy and those in the the position of accepting a gift like one from Heifer International, knew that they too hold their fate in their own hands.
I believe one of the most imperative lessons for kids here and all over the world is to learn that a better life can be a reality if they seek out ways to make it happen. We have created a program called B.O.O.M (Business Ownership Opportunity Mindset) to teach kids the principles and important components of entrepreneurship and how to ‘think outside of the box.’ The program is has changed the way we talk to our kids about money and business, so that we can educate and create more financially savvy adults. It is so important to teach our youth their incredible options in life, so they may actually begin to see themselves as better and capable of reaching new levels of success in their lives.
